I just wanted to confirm what Jeremy is saying. I was surprised how many schools wanted to hire a Ph.D. to teach students how to build Web pages. One smaller, state school, which will remain nameless, even asked me directly if I could teach flash and HTML.

It made me wonder how much universities should focus on these skills. Like Jeremy, I think undergraduate journalism education in the Internet age should focus on the core storytelling skills that translate to any medium. It's important to know what technologies and design possibilities exist, but focuses on technology too much leaves journalism mired in the same quagmire it is now.

Clyde -- it was my pleasure to sit in on your POMA conference session. I learned a log that gives me hope I can still finish out my dream career in outdoor writing -- it just may have to be through different media than I figured. Thanks for a great presentation.

Clyde -- you can be sure that POMA and POMA members heard your message and already, just a few days after your presentation, are setting up their blogs. We don't wish to become extinct.

Clyde...

Bill Kovach had some interesting things to say today at the brown bag related to citizen journalism. I tried to report on them a bit: www.changingnewsroom.wordpress.com

Welcome to the site Joe! Nice comments. It's funny how it took MyMissourian's crash for us to realize how powerful free software like Wordpress is. It begs the question, why don't more news organizations farm their operations to other existing sites. Why not have Flickr handle your photos, for example?
Maybe it's the topic for a new post!

[...] Something is brewing in journalism. A very nice Clyde Bentley report on citizen journalism. Includes this lovely line: “Citizen journalism is no more a replacement for traditional journalism than teabags are a replacement for water. Both can stand alone comfortably, but when combined they produce something quite wonderful.” [...]
